New media training service helps businesses tell their story

Two well-known and respected communication specialists in the region have joined forces to help people and organisations to raise, and effectively manage, their profile via the media.

Melinda Smith and Craig Eardley’s new Media Training Matters service offers customised media and presentation skills training for leaders, media spokespeople, as well as marketing and public relations professionals.

Melinda said the practical training provides an understanding of how the media works as well as interview and media liaison tips to ensure success.

She said knowing what is newsworthy and then quickly and effectively getting the right messages across is key.

“Armed with some theory, we interview participants in front of a news camera operator to put our practical tips into practice in a supportive environment,” Melinda said.

“We show people that media interviews are easier than they think.”

Craig said traditional media remains an important promotional tool that works alongside advertising, marketing, and social media.

He said media training is an essential risk management tool for organisations’ crisis and issues management planning.

“Approaching media interviews from the audience’s perspective is something people overlook when working with the media,” Craig said.

“The tools we provide are helpful for any business communication including presentations and meetings.

“We show you how to tell your story well to achieve the outcomes you are looking for.”

Full day and half day training programs are available for individuals and groups.

Workshops are also available for marketing and PR practitioners needing skills and tools for effective media liaison as part of their organisation’s communications strategy.

Melinda Smith is a former Television Journalist, News Presenter, and Radio Broadcaster. She established her own strategic communication consultancy following a three-decade career working in the media, corporate communication, and public relations.

Craig Eardley has almost 30 years’ experience in communication and public relations. After working for several Sydney and Hunter organisations in PR roles, he established his own consultancy 20 years ago.

The pair is presenting at Business Hunter’s next Business Development Forum on 12 May.
