Local businesses support 2019 Surfest Women’s Pro

For the fourth year in a row the Surfest Women’s Pro has remained a special priority for Newcastle businesses.

Earlier this month, Surfest held a cocktail function at Merewether Surfhouse which saw more than 200 guests celebrate the 84 local businesses that took part in this year’s crowdfunding initiative, making the 2019 Homes Civil Developments Surfest Women’s Pro a reality.

The night included a silent auction with prizes donated by Newcastle businesses and talented local artists and photographers. There were 14 items which sold for a total of $7,860, with the funds being donated to local charity, the Waves of Wellness Foundation. Joel Pilgrim, its Founder, was there on the night and said he was excited about the donation.

“We are so happy with the result; we’re very lucky to have such a wonderful business community in Newcastle backing us,” Joel said.

Will-Hayden Smith from the World Surf League facilitated a panel discussion with Sally Fitzgibbons, Philippa Anderson, Kira Pinkerton and Brisa Hennessy. The women were very appreciative of the efforts of local businesses. Sally Fitzgibbons said how important women in surfing are and that she’s thankful people are finally realising that.

All 84 businesses were matched with a seeded competitor from the Women’s Pro on the night. Some of the guests were even able to meet their surfer and make the most of a photo opportunity on the night.

Managing Director of Holmes Civil Developments, Ben Holmes said winning the naming rights of the competition was a real honour.

“Getting involved was never really about the opportunity to promote our business, it was more about giving something back. Surfest is an iconic Newcastle event that showcases the best of our city, our beautiful beaches and lifestyle,” Ben said.

“It’s really important that events like Surfest continue in our city and I commend the work of Warren Smith and Col Law to find a way that this event continues and enables organisation’s like ours to be involved.”

Surfest

Surfest originated in 1985 when Newcastle's movers and shakers were desperately trying to banish the city's grime-ridden industrial image and showcase the unheralded beauty of Newcastle beaches and surf breaks, Those visionaries developed the BHP Steel International Surfest's first incarnation and the richest professional surfing event in the world at that time.

Surfest has since become Australia's largest surfing festival.
