Local Author, Alana Henderson, has published a new book Out of the Fog: adventures through lifestyle change that sends an important message to the business community.
After running a successful home-based editing and interview training business for 25 years, Alana learnt the importance of work/life balance the hard way.
Alana’s tireless dedication to her business caused her to have a stroke and undergo a long recovery experience, a story she tells in her book.
“Like many others out there, I never thought the stress and pressure I had placed on myself in my business would catch up on me,” Alana said.
“Having a stroke that injured my brain and actually caused me to lose much of my language abilities was scary, but it has been a very valuable learning experience.”
Three weeks after the stroke, Alana was also diagnosed with breast cancer and diabetes, causing immense pressure on her to close her business.
“I refused to give up what I had worked so hard to establish. I used my own adult education experience and project management principles to overcome my disabilities and teach myself to communicate again,” Alana said.
“After my experience, I was determined to help others and show them that there is a way to balance your passion for your work with your health and wellbeing. Thus, Out of the Fog was created.
“One of the keys messages I really want to get across is that your health is always more important than your business or work. You always have to look after number one first.”
Alana is now sought after in the business community as a speaker, sharing her story and insight on coping with the pressures of business and on how to orchestrate ‘me time’ and a healthy lifestyle into everyday routines.
Alana will tell her story and share insight on her book at Maitland City Library’s ‘Look Who’s Talking Author’ program tonight.
