Key Executive appointments strengthen HMRI’s leadership

The Hunter Medical Research Institute (HMRI) recently announced two major leadership appointments that will further enhance its mission to transform the health and wellbeing of our communities. Brian Jones joins as Chief Operating Officer (COO), while Todd Williams steps into the role of Chief Growth Officer (CGO).

These strategic hires reflect HMRI’s ongoing commitment to fostering a culture of excellence and attracting top-tier talent to lead the next phase of growth and innovation.

Following a competitive recruitment process, Brian Jones has been appointed as HMRI’s new COO. With an extensive background spanning tertiary education and the public sector, particularly in property development, construction, HR, and change management, Brian brings a wealth of experience to HMRI.

“We are thrilled to have someone of Brian’s calibre join our team. His expertise in leading large-scale organisational transformations and his strategic leadership make him the ideal fit for our corporate services team. The role attracted a strong pool of candidates, which reflects HMRI’s reputation for attracting top talent. Brian’s leadership will be pivotal in advancing our strategic goals and enhancing the institute’s operational efficiency,” HMRI CEO, Professor Frances Kay-Lambkin said.

Brian’s previous role as Executive Director of Change & Improvement at the University of Newcastle saw him lead transformative initiatives that earned national recognition, including the 2023 ATEM Excellence in People & Culture Award.

He has been instrumental in advancing several projects worth over $1 billion, including the development of the NU Space building at the University of Newcastle. His track record in delivering successful, large-scale construction and organisational change projects positions him as a key asset for HMRI’s future growth.

HMRI has appointed Todd Williams as their new Chief Growth Officer following a successful tenure as Acting Chief Partnership and Development Officer. Todd will now officially oversee HMRI’s Business Development, Philanthropy, and Grants Development teams; key pillars of the Institute’s 2023+ Strategy.

“Todd has been instrumental in strengthening our relationships with investors, donors, and stakeholders. His ability to foster these connections, combined with his experience across corporate, government, and industry sectors, is essential to our continued growth. Todd’s leadership has already delivered impressive results, and we’re excited to see him drive the Institute’s future growth. His expertise will be key to expanding HMRI’s reach and securing new opportunities,” Professor Kay-Lambkin said.

Hunter Medical Research Institute

The Hunter Medical Research Institute (HMRI) is a translational research institute. Since 1998, its pioneering partnership with the University of Newcastle and Hunter New England Local Health District has delivered key translational health and medical research and technology closely aligned to community health needs.

Throughout Newcastle and the Hunter, more than 1200 clinical and biomedical researchers and support staff are employed across seven HMRI Research Programs, striving to prevent, cure and treat a diverse range of serious illnesses by translating research findings made in the laboratory and through advanced imaging techniques, into real health treatments and preventative strategies for the community.

HMRI provides vital funding and facilities to fuel research, but the heart and soul of the Institute are people, the researchers, the generous donors and supporters, the committed volunteers, and the patients who participate in trials and ultimately benefit from the research results.
