Hundreds of local women and men affected by breast cancer will benefit from the support of local Registered Clubs.
Local Clubs joined forces with the Hunter Breast Cancer Foundation this month to hold a charity Race Day at Newcastle Jockey Club raising just over $24,000.
In the past 12 months the Foundation has provided more than 883 transport trips (more than 65,000 kilometres) to and from appointments for people undergoing treatment for breast cancer. It has also provided 236 house cleaning services, 86 lawn care services and it has assisted patients with the purchase of breast prostheses following surgery, provided scholarship to cover school fees, provided families from outside the region with accommodation and meals during hospitalisation and supported a series of information group meetings run by nurses from the Calvary Mater Hospital to assist women recovering from breast cancer.
Foundation President, Rosalie Taggart, said the support of local Clubs for the annual charity Race Day has raised more than $120,000 in its six years.
“Each dollar raised is carefully managed to ensure that we are helping people of the Hunter while they undergo treatment for breast cancer,” Rosalie said.
“Our local Clubs are an important part of our community. The Foundation is part of a broad network of charity and community based organisations that benefit directly and indirectly from the support of Registered Clubs. We are most honoured to have their continued support.”
Clubs NSW State Councillor for the Newcastle and Hunter Region, Jon Chin, said the Hunter Breast Cancer Foundation did a magnificent job for local people despite not receiving any government funding.
“The Foundations provides such an important level of grass root support for the people of our region. With one in seven women now being diagnosed with breast cancer Local Clubs join willingly to support the work of this small volunteer-based organisation that adds so much value to local families,” Jon said.
The charity event is sponsored by: Clubs NSW, Club Keno, Belmont 16s, Club Macquarie, Hexham Bowling Club, Toronto RSL, Souths, Toronto Diggers and Wests.
