It began in 2014 with a realisation for Got Your Back Sista (GYBS) Founder, Mel Histon. While working on a documentary about sex trafficking in Nepal, Mel witnessed women facing harrowing conditions and vowed to make a positive difference for women and children in her own community upon her return.
Mel established GYBS in 2016. Since then, the registered charity has supported more than 5,000 women in the Hunter who have suffered from family and domestic violence. The organisation provides crisis shelters, recovery programs and short courses to help women rebuild their lives.
Mel said she is proud of the dedicated team that has grown around the mission over the past decade.
“We’ve turned a small, home-based charity into a trusted frontline service. Through our one-on-one casework support and recovery programs, we’ve walked alongside women as they rebuild their safety, confidence and independence,” Mel said.
“This milestone belongs not just to us, but to every woman we’ve supported and every community member who has chosen to be part of the solution.”
The charity operates two op shops with all proceeds staying within the organisation to fund its pantry and meal services. Since 2023, GYBS has provided 6,000 meals to women in financial distress and continues to support approximately 400 women annually through its free grocery service.
Founding Board Member, Belinda Wellings said the 10-year milestone reflects a community that refuses to look away.
“Ten years ago, we set out to create a place where women escaping domestic violence could feel seen and supported. It’s proof of what’s possible when compassion is matched with action,” Belinda said.
The impact of these services is felt deeply by those who access them. GYBS client, Frankie Grandelis said the workshops and training sessions provided a renewed sense of direction.
“Beyond the training opportunities, the pantry and meals they provided made a real difference during times when I needed extra support. It wasn’t just about food, it was about knowing someone cared,” Frankie said.
Frankie said every interaction with the team made her feel safe and treated with dignity.
GYBS is marking its anniversary with a series of community fundraisers throughout 2026. This includes an official event on Tuesday, 17 March 2026, followed by a Charity Surf Out on Friday, 8 May 2026. The charity will also partner with local sports organisations, including a Charity Round with Newcastle Netball on Saturday, 13 June 2023 and the Hamilton Hawks Rugby Club on Saturday, 25 July 2026.
The year of celebration will conclude with a community day at Blackbutt on Sunday, 20 September 2026 and the annual ‘I Run For Her’ campaign in October.
Mel said she hopes that within the next 10 years, domestic violence services will no longer be a necessity.
“People regularly ask how they can help and my response is, however you can. If you have time to give, you may wish to volunteer or donate canned groceries for our open pantry,” Mel said.
