Downer’s Hexham manufacturing facility has welcomed the next generation of tradespeople, with four first-year apprentices commencing their training at the Hunter manufacturing hub. They join a cohort of 10 other apprentices completing their electrical, sheet metal, and boilermaker qualifications, gaining hands-on experience in a state-of-the-art manufacturing environment just north of Newcastle.
Mechanical Superintendent, Matthew McCosker, a former apprentice himself, said he was proud to support the next generation of tradespeople as they develop their skills and careers.
“Our first-year apprentices attend TAFE locally one day per week, then spend the rest of the week at our Hexham facility, where they gain hands-on experience across switchboard and switch rooms, skid fabrication, structural steel fabrication, fitting, and machining,” Matthew said.
“The tasks they undertake depend on their trade, but they typically start with basic hand tools, part preparation, and machine operation before progressing to more complex projects as their skills develop.”
Each of the new apprentices has taken a unique path into their trade. Colby and Lachlan are following in their fathers’ footsteps, while Nicholas has transitioned into his apprenticeship after working with Downer as a Trades Assistant at Eraring Power Station.
Matthew said that mentoring from senior apprentices and experienced leaders was essential in supporting first-year apprentices as they navigate their training.
“This includes a strong focus on well-being, hands-on training, practical advice, and strict adherence to safety requirements,” he said.
“During my own apprenticeship at another local organisation, I had the privilege of being mentored by skilled tradesmen who offered invaluable support throughout my training. It’s great to see Downer offering that same level of mentorship to their apprentices today.”
Downer’s Hexham facility is a major regional manufacturing hub and a base for the company’s mechanical and electrical shutdowns, turnarounds, and outage services. The team works across key sites including Bayswater Power Station, Port of Newcastle, Port Waratah Coal, Tomago Aluminium, Orica, and NCIG.
Manufacturing Manager, Liam Parker, congratulated the new apprentices and emphasised Downer’s long-term investment in the Hunter’s industrial and manufacturing sector.
“Downer has been partnering with our customers and investing in the Hunter’s industrial and manufacturing capability for more than 100 years,” Liam said.
“Many of the region’s best and brightest have started their careers at Downer, and our apprentice program plays a crucial role in ensuring critical skills remain in the local area.”
