Horizon on the Harbour, CKDS Architecture’s second project in association with Hill Thalis, was recently awarded an NSW Australian Institute of Architects Award for Residential Architecture – Multiple Housing.
The generous 5,600m2 site on Newcastle’s waterfront is the crucial link between the recently delivered projects to the east and the proposed Honeysuckle HQ precinct, which will step-up in height to the west and complete the Honeysuckle masterplan.
“We are thrilled with our recent AIA (Australian Institute of Architects) award for Horizon. It’s our second collaboration with Philip and the team at Hill Thalis and it just proves that working in association can provide outstanding results,” director, Staurt Campbell said.
Located at the junction of three new public spaces; the Honeysuckle promenade, a public square on Steel Street’s extension and a park on Cottage Creek Corridor; the project comprises three buildings defining two courtyards open to the water.
“Horizon responds to its place between the harbour and the city, offering Newcastle 110 generous new apartments in the thriving Honeysuckle precinct. We are delighted to be recognised amongst our peers with a NSW AIA (Australian Institute of Architects) award for the design of Horizon, our second project the team at Hill Thalis,” Stuart said.
The buildings are united by their waterfront alignment, scale and material palette. The design is an exemplar of equitable view sharing as the landscaped courtyards allow views between the buildings from both the public and private domain behind.
Incorporating a diversity of residential accommodation, the development comprises 110 new apartments with generous external spaces in the form of terraces, balconies and roof gardens. Remarkably, 88% of apartments face north with harbour views and over 75% are cross ventilated, providing high amenity for residents.
“We’re so proud to be part of the group of Newcastle Architects recognised in the NSW AIA (Australian Institute of Architects) awards. It really shows design in our city is of an excellent standard, worthy of winning state awards,” he said.
The buildings sit on a gently raised brick plinth, providing flood proofing with retail frontages on the ground floor activating the site’s key corners. The design is a considered response to this exceptional site and a model for the area’s evolving urbanity.
