Urgently needed support for Hunter residents experiencing breast cancer and their families is here thanks to the support of a local business’ charitable foundation.
McGrath Greater Charitable Foundation Breast Care Nurse, Helen Moore, is now on hand to make life that little bit easier for local families going through breast cancer.
Helen is the region’s second McGrath nurse based at Calvary Mater Newcastle. A nurse of 27 years, Helen is dedicated to providing quality and compassionate care to local people experiencing breast cancer and their families.
Her role is supported by $250,000 in funding from the Greater Charitable Foundation.
Greater Charitable Foundation CEO, Anne Long, said her Board recognised a second breast care nurse for the region was urgently needed.
“McGrath breast care nurses deliver on the Greater Charitable Foundation’s mission to improve life outcomes for families and communities,” Anne said.
Anne said as well as providing funding, the Greater Charitable Foundation also assists in providing Greater Bank staff to volunteer for its charity partners. Several Greater Bank divisions are going a step further holding team building Pink Stumps cricket matches to raise further funds for breast care nurses.
Helen says this is her dream job.
“I love being a McGrath Breast Care Nurse because it gives me a rare opportunity to work in a supportive, multidisciplinary team to provide the best possible care for patients,” Helen said.
The late Jane McGrath, Founder of the McGrath Foundation, made it her mission to fund more breast care nurses after experiencing support from one during her battle with cancer. She described the nurse as an angel.
Since 2005, the McGrath Foundation has supported more than 50,000 families experiencing breast cancer. Currently, there are 117 McGrath breast care nurses across Australia.
The Greater Charitable Foundation funding was provided from its 2016 funding allocation of almost $1M. The foundation is funded from the profits of Greater Bank and is currently calling on applications from charities for its 2017 funding round.
