Local organisations looking to kick-start a project that supports a vibrant and thriving port community are encouraged to apply for funding through Port of Newcastle’s annual Your Port, Our Community sponsorship program.
The sponsorship program supports local organisations, groups, and charities to deliver initiatives or projects that benefit those who live, work, and play by the harbour.
This year, a total of $90,000 will be available. While there will not be a cap on the amount that can be applied for in the funding pool, Port of Newcastle will choose projects that best align with its priorities to deliver a positive outcome for the local community.
Port of Newcastle CEO, Craig Carmody said the Port was delighted to again deliver the program in 2022 following a record number of applications in 2021.
“Given their proximity to one another, the Port and Newcastle have a strong connection,” Craig said.
“As a significant employment and economic contributor to the region, we are proud to be able to further support our surrounding community again this year through the Your Port, Our Community sponsorship program.
“Over the past two years the Port has provided close to $170,000 in grants to 24 local organisations for projects that provide social, economic, and environmental outcomes for the community of Newcastle and the city’s visitors.
“Last year we saw a record number of applications, with 13 successful local organisations receiving funding for projects ranging from wetlands rehabilitation and family-friendly sustainability events to historical signage and youth development programs.”
2021 grant recipient, Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club used the funding to purchase new life jackets for its ‘Tackers’ learn to sail program.
Sailing Academy Manager, Jacqueline Ellis said the Club welcomes over 500 children every year to their courses, so the equipment is very well used.
“The new lifejackets we purchased with Port of Newcastle’s support will enable us to continue to safely introduce kids to the fun of sailing for many years to come,” Jacqueline said.
Port of Newcastle’s Your Port, Our Community sponsorship program adds to the $1 million the Port provides annually through the Newcastle Port Community Contribution Fund.
The Contribution Fund is administered by the New South Wales Government.
Applications close at 5:00 pm on Friday 18 November.
