The Newcastle Permanent Charitable Foundation (NPCF) has granted Sleapy’s Foundation $92,000 to develop a clinically-equipped outdoor courtyard at the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) of the John Hunter Hospital. This initiative will benefit children and their families throughout NSW.
Designed to resemble a tranquil, non-hospital environment, the outdoor courtyard is estimated to provide respite to around 750 young patients and their families from the Hunter and New England regions each year.
This innovative outdoor space will allow critically ill children to receive life-sustaining treatment in a more natural, comfortable setting, while offering a space for families and friends to gather, helping alleviate pressure on the ICU facilities.
NPCF spokesperson Kirrah McClelland said the space would significantly enhance the overall experience and wellbeing of patients, families, and staff.
“Research suggests that outdoor spaces like this can aid in the healing process, helping patients recover and return home to their families sooner. We are honoured to support Sleapy’s Foundation on this meaningful project,” Ms McClelland said.
“Our grant will fund the planter beds, integrated timber bench seating, waterproofing, landscaping, and irrigation for the garden. We hope this space will bring comfort and joy to patients and their families for many years to come.”
Sleapy’s Foundation Founding Director Peter Sleap explained that the courtyard has been thoughtfully designed for both functionality and comfort.
“We want patients and their families to benefit fully from the space, with the opportunity to get fresh air, sunlight, and connect with nature. The courtyard will feature two beds with full medical services panel provisions,” Mr Sleap said.
“We are incredibly grateful for Newcastle Permanent Charitable Foundation’s support, which has made this outdoor garden possible for our community.”
Delivered in partnership with Multiplex and Hunter New England Health, the PICU courtyard is expected to be completed in March 2026.
