Lake Macquarie City Council has replaced more than 1650 fluorescent light tubes with energy-saving LEDs in its Administration Building, which is expected to result in annual savings of $20,000.

Meanwhile, solar panels have been installed at a number of sites including Council’s Works Depot, Speers Point Swim Centre, Lake Macquarie City Art Gallery and the Swansea Multi-Purpose Centre.

“The move to upgrade lighting and install solar panels at Council sites across the City is another positive step towards creating a more sustainable community,” Council’s Manager Sustainability, Alice Howe, said.

“Making these seemingly small changes will result in annual cost savings for Council, as well reducing our energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.”

“We can all make a few changes to our everyday actions to save money and help maintain a healthy environment for further generations. Businesses can download Council’s free Lake Macquarie Sustainable Living Guide to improve their energy efficiency, decrease water consumption and reduce waste.”

Twenty one energy efficient heat pumps and solar hot water systems have been installed in community facilities with identified high hot water usage this year. The initiative was undertaken with assistance from the NSW Government and will help community groups using the facilities to reduce their operating costs.
