Principal for Walkom Real Estate, Scott Walkom has been formally instated as the new HMRI Foundation Chair to champion the Hunter Medical Research Institute’s future fundraising endeavours and community engagement.
Scott brings a background in accounting, finance and property, with qualifications, including a Master of Business Administration (MBA) and Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com), to the position.
He joined HMRI in 2015, following in the path of his late mother, Sonia, who was an original member of the Foundation from 1998 and a HMRI Exceptional Service Medal recipient.
Chairman for HMRI, Kyle Loades said that Sonia was an advocate for HMRI and is therefore looking forward to continuing their partnership with the Walkom family.
“Sonia was a much-admired supporter for HMRI, right up until she lost her battle with cancer in May 2014. We are delighted to continue that family relationship with Scott,” Kyle said.
“He has a passion for medical research and deep understanding of its value to community wellbeing. Also, having managed Walkom Real Estate for the past 25 years, Scott has a wealth of commercial experience and many strong and loyal networking connections in the business community.
“I’m confident his appointment will continue to build the HMRI donor base and awareness.”
Scott currently sits on the Salvation Army Advisory Board (Newcastle) and is a member of the Property Council of NSW, CPA Australia, Real Estate Institute of NSW and Newcastle Club.
Scott said he is looking forward to contributing to HMRI in the role of Chair.
“It gives me great pleasure to contribute to HMRI and play a small part in helping the community live a better life through improvements in medical treatments and efficient health practices,” Scott said.
“Medical research is a long-term commitment which requires lots of investment from government, industry and the community to be successful. Unfortunately, it’s an area that is constrained by lack of funds so we risk losing talented people and holding research back.
“My aim is to help increase funding and ensure HMRI maintains its strong regional links.”
The HMRI Board endorsed Mr Walkom’s role at the February 9 meeting. He fills the void created when former foundation leader, Kyle Loades, became Board Chair in December.
