Maitland Regional Athletics Centre receives architectural acclaim

Maitland City Council, in collaboration with Studio Dot, has received the Award for Public Architecture as part of the Newcastle Architecture Awards 2021.

They received the award for the Maitland Regional Athletics Centre. The achievement marks the third time in four years that Maitland Council has received the award.

Previously they have been recognised for Maitland Sportsground 2018 and the Riverlink building at The Levee in 2019.

The design focus of the Athletics Centre was to deliver a complex to be used for multiple purposes by the community, including sports and community events, and provide value for money with a robust building and track that will stand the test of time.

The close concentration of public and cultural buildings within this area offers the opportunity to form a key hub for the city and incorporate the sporting complex as a major piece of public space.

Council’s Senior Project Architect, Murray Wood said the Award was a huge achievement for the region and cements Maitland’s spot as a hub for architectural innovation and world-class facilities.

“Winning this award is a great accomplishment for Council and being recognised for the third time in four years highlights the facilities and venues that Maitland has to offer,” Murray said.

“Our thanks and congratulations to Studio Dot for their assistance in creating a centre that fulfilled all the functional design brief requirements with a multitude of positive feedback.”

The Newcastle Architecture Awards celebrate design excellence in local architecture, providing a great way for Architects to receive public and peer recognition for their projects.

The project has now been added to the shortlist for the NSW Architecture Awards 2021.

The winners of those awards will be announced on Friday 2 July.

Maitland City Council

The Maitland Local Government Area (LGA) covers an area of 396km2 in the Lower Hunter region of New South Wales.

Maitland is the focus of a diversity of economic activities including agriculture, tourism, mining, manufacturing, transport and construction industries. Arguably Maitland’s greatest asset is its location on the rich alluvial flats of the Hunter and Paterson Rivers. It is one of the most highly productive areas in NSW and a service centre for a rich agricultural hinterland.
