Students meet potential employers at university career expo

Over 700 students had the opportunity to meet potential employers at the annual Careers and Employment Expo at the University of Newcastle (UON), Callaghan campus.

More than 50 exhibitors attended the event in March, with many actively recruiting final year students for Graduate Programs commencing in 2019.

Organisations offered advice about graduate and vacation employment, internship opportunities, scholarships and other programs that provide students the chance to gain valuable employability skills with leading organisations.

Organisations in attendance included AmpControl, CIMIC Group, Defence Force Recruiting, Greater Bank, Lendlease, Newcastle Airport, North Construction & Building, Pitcher Partners, Australian Taxation Office, Transport for NSW and The Wests Group.

Pro-Vice Chancellor Teaching and Learning, Professor Liz Burd said it was great to see such strong engagement between industry and UON students.

“I thank our dedicated team and business involved for providing the opportunity for students to start exploring and developing their careers. It is especially great that the regional business community is involved in promoting opportunities for students to build their career in the Newcastle Hunter region,” Liz said.

Employers embraced the opportunity to speak directly with the University of Newcastle students and were able to target high-performing future graduates from all disciplines.

Students were also treated to a unique opportunity to learn how to dress for success. The style team from Charlestown Square gave tips on making a good first impression, with a selection of professional attire from Hunter retailers on-site, as well as five minute makeovers from Priceline Pharmacy Charlestown Square. Many students took the opportunity to have a free professional LinkedIn photo taken, with their new, business ready looks.

Following the University of Newcastle Careers and Employment Expo, representatives from business and industry met with students and faculty members for networking.

Delegates from business, law, engineering, construction and IT sectors were treated to a tour of NeW Space, followed by afternoon tea and networking with staff and students from the Faculty of Business and Law and the Faculty of Engineering and Built Environment.

Professors Darrell Evans addressed the gathering, identifying the importance of developing strong partnerships with employers and preparing graduates with a range of employability skills, to ensure they remain competitive and relevant in the workplace.

The University’s Careers and Student Development team works closely with employers from all sectors, providing tailored recruitment support for undergraduate and graduate positions.
