Out of the Square extends major CONDA sponsorship commitment

With the local theatre industry struggling with the ongoing effects of of the COVID pandemic, Out of the Square (OOTS) is proud to announce they have signed up to continue their support for the City of Newcastle Drama Association (CONDA) Awards.

This is Newcastle and the Hunter’s prestigious theatre awards night and the longest running theatre awards program in Australia.

The CONDA Awards ceremony will take place on 11 December at the Civic Theatre.

Over 40 local theatre companies will have shows, actors, and production prowess judged over 26 categories.

The award itself is hand crafted by local artist Lee Howes. This year’s presenters include Sofia Nolan (Seven Networks Royal Flying Doctor Service) and Ben Mingay (Packed to the Rafters, Frayed), both of which started their acting careers in Newcastle.

Founder and Managing Director of OOTS, Marty Adnum said they are avid supporters of the local art and theatre seen and are keen to support the Awards again.

“We are passionate supporters of local theatre and the performing arts. When we first came onboard as the Major Sponsor of CONDA in 2014, the awards looked to be in their final year, due to financial uncertainty and dwindling attendance. Since that time, we have worked closely with CONDA to deliver sell out award ceremonies and re-establish financial stability,” Marty said.

“Although it is a substantial financial commitment, this is all part of us giving back where we can, knowing for a truly modern city to thrive, we need to support our incredibly talented local performing arts industry.

“Each show we see, each ticket we buy, further contributes to the well-rounded success and growing richness of Newcastle and the Hunter.”

Also joining OOTS this year in this three-year commitment is the Civic Theatre and JH Productions.

CONDA President, Shane Bransdon said few, if any, sectors were hit harder by the pandemic than the performing arts.

“This is a hugely welcome show of support for the local industry by three leading organisations. Theatre was the first industry to shut down and one of the last to reopen,” Shane said.

“Production companies have been brought to their knees over the last two years and local theatre companies and practitioners have been hit hard.”

Theatre Manager, Leonie Wallace said the Civic Theatre is delighted to be supporting the prestigious CONDA Awards.

“At a time when our industry has faced unparalleled adversity, this is a great way for us to show our support of the local theatre community,” Leonie said.

“Our team is looking forward to an evening of festivity and joy, as we all celebrate being part of the wonderful and brilliantly talented Newcastle Theatre Community.”
