Local business continues to support breast cancer

There was no sign of ‘pink fatigue’ in the Hunter Valley this breast cancer awareness month with a record number of people attending the annual Bubbly Breakfast for the Hunter Breast Cancer Foundation.

Pink was definitely the order of the day with more than 420 local people attending on Sunday.

Now in its seventh year the Bubbly Breakfast was held at Crowne Plaza Hunter Valley and, with the support of Peterson House, raises money for the Hunter Breast Cancer Foundation – an organisation that is dedicated to providing grass root support for local people and their families.

Hunter Breast Cancer Foundation President, Rosalie Taggart said the ongoing support of Peterson House had made the annual Bubbly Breakfast a key event in the Hunter during breast cancer awareness month.

‘The Foundation provides support to more than 650 local people each year while they deal with breast cancer. This type of event is so very important in helping the Foundation to reach further into the community and assist those who need support,’ Rosalie said.

“Although Sarah Murdoch is right to be concerned about ‘pink fatigue’ it is not something we saw yesterday.”

“Businesses and the local community are still keen to be involved with raising funds and awareness for breast cancer, because it is still a disease that has touched so many people.”

Hunter entertainer, Lauren O’Brien, as the Principal of the ‘Choir of Hard Knockers’, led 30 members of the newly established Breast Cancer Choir. The Choir is a collaboration between the Foundation and the University of Newcastle Conservatorium of Music.

This year the Bubbly Breakfast was also supported by Glencore Xstrata Ravensworth Underground Mine and it is expected that the event raised more than $20,000.

The Hunter Breast Cancer Foundation is a non-profit organisation, which provides support for women and men diagnosed and being treated for breast cancer in the Hunter, and for their families. It does this through transportation to and from treatment, providing more than 650 comfort cushions to patients post surgery and assisting with professional lawn maintenance and house cleaning services for people undergoing treatment.

The Foundation supports the education of young people who have parents with breast cancer. It donated medical equipment to a number of hospitals and funds scholarships young students whose parents are undergoing treatment . The Foundation also sponsors a wig library at Newcastle Private Hospital and donated a series of textbooks for use by oncology nurses.
