This week Hunter TAFE staff recovered a time capsule that had been concealed underground on Newcastle Campus for 25 years.

It contained items such as wine, a metal award stamp, a student handbook and photos.

Institute Director, Phil Cox said the opening of the time capsule showcased Hunter TAFE’s rich history which exceeds more than 100 years.

“In 1988, the dominant theme of the year’s operations was improving the relevance of TAFE programs to meet the training needs of industry, a theme that still resonates with us today,” he said.

“Today, more than 24,000 students are enrolled through Newcastle Campus and our graduates are now reaching their potential both locally and internationally.”

The capsule was buried by Hunter TAFE students and staff in November 1988 as part of a bicentennial event, marking 200 years since the arrival of the First Fleet.

The time capsule and its contents will be on display at Hunter TAFE Newcastle Campus Library from December 2013 until early 2014.
