A group of local women are bringing together the thought leaders of the Hunter Region at a business breakfast to mark International Women's Day.
The event on Friday, 7 March 2014 will raise money for UN Women Australia and is being coordinated by the Hunter chapter of the global arm of the United Nations.
The breakfast will feature a “Q&A”-style panel facilitated by ABC Radio's Phil Ashley-Brown and including;
- University of Newcastle Vice-Chancellor Caroline McMillen
- HVRF Chair and director, Dr Eileen Doyle
- Chair of Tourism Hunter, Will Creedon
- CEO of NSW Health Pathology Tracey McCosker
Chair and co-founder of the Hunter Chapter of UN Women Australia, Kirsten Molloy, said the group was hosting the breakfast to raise important funds to empower women and girls worldwide, while at the same time having a conversation about what can be done locally.
“We're very excited to have a panel of such impressive Hunter businesspeople to answer questions and share their ideas on gender equity locally and making a difference,” Kirsten said.
“The theme of the Q&A will bring such an important global issue back to the Hunter and look at starting the conversation of what is possible when it comes to supporting gender equity in Newcastle and the Hunter.”
“Women are far more likely than men to live in poverty because of discrimination and lack of access to education, employment and financial services.”
This breakfast is one of many events being hosted throughout the country to raise awareness and money of UN Women Australia.
“All International Women's Day events will support UN Women Australia that in turn supports access to education, training and paid employment. Empowered women and girls who have equal access to education and work means more prosperous economies and a better future for all,” she said.
The Newcastle Business Breakfast to mark International Women's Day will be held Friday March 7, 2014 at 7am in the Starlight Room of Wests Leagues Club. Tickets are $45 per person and include a hot breakfast, corporate sponsorship tables of ten are $750.
