Singleton Council is seeking members for its newly-created Sustainability Committee.
Expressions for interest are being called for representatives from the local aboriginal community, persons with technical expertise in the subject area and general community members with an interest in sustainability issues.
The committee will be a reference group during the development of the Singleton Community Environmental Sustainability Strategy and Action Plan.
It will also be responsible for:
- promoting engagement with, and fostering participation by, the community in the development and implementation of sustainability initiatives which minimise our ecological footprint;
- raising council and community awareness about long term sustainability through education; and
- providing a local reference point for liaison with and between stakeholders and service providers consulting and working in the community to promote sustainability.
The other members of the Committee are councillors Godfrey Adamthwaite and Val Scott, along with the Council’s Director of Planning and Sustainable Environment and Manager of Planning and Environment.
Singleton Mayor John Martin says the creation of the committee reflects Council’s enhanced commitment to establishing a local response to local and global issues with local consequences.
“There has always been a concern locally for the quality of the environment and for how environmental issues impact on the quality our wellbeing now and into the future,” he said.
