From a car boot to 25 years in business

When Dallas Stokes and Richard Gordon identified an opportunity in 1993, they worked hard from the boot of their car to turn their idea into a reality.

25 years later their business, R&D Technology has grown to employ 20 staff, have a multi-million-dollar turnover and partner with world-leading brands.

Under current CEO, Steve Preston, the business is celebrating a quarter of a century in business and is showing no signs of slowing down.

Steve said that while Dallas and Richard are no longer active in the business, their hard work, partnerships and customer focus remains.

“We have captured the core values of the organisation in what we call our Points of Culture and they guide our dealings with all of our stakeholders, but particularly with each other,” Steve said.

“We have a great record of longevity of staff and a high degree of engagement and we take pride in both. Another thing we are proud of is the unique work and life balance that employees enjoy.”

R&D provides electrical engineering services and products to a wide range of industries across Australia from its Cardiff headquarters and a branch in Brisbane.

Initially focusing on the coal mining sector, it is has diversified more recently into the sectors of health, utilities, food and beverage, and has also added specialised product manufacturing and distribution to its repertoire.

The business received a boost recently with the signing of an international distribution agreement between R&D and global giant General Electric (GE) for a specific product range.

GE were looking to expand their Australian and New Zealand business and they chose R&D due to their existing market presence, their reputation with customers and their proven reliability.

Staff of R&D celebrated the 25-year milestone last month.
