Out of the Square Media was amongst the top community-serving individuals and businesses honoured at the 43rd Newcastle Business Club Annual Awards.
Held at the monthly Newcastle Business Club luncheon on Thursday 10 July 2018, the awards celebrated local business and individual contribution to the community and this year also incorporated the Hunter Diversity Awards.
Renowned businessman Colin Law, disability champion Lloyd Valentine and Out of the Square Media were announced as the individual, youth and organisation recipients.
President of Newcastle Business Club, Holly Martin, said the winners of this year’s awards play an important role in the local community.
“Each of the organisations and individuals who were finalists, were found by the judges to be going out of their way to contribute to the community they work and live within,” Holly said. “The winners themselves are great examples of people and businesses that truly want to see Newcastle and the Hunter shine.”
“The contribution of the winners to our community cannot be denied and it was a pleasure to be able to recognise them in front of a sold out crowd. The awards have been running for 43 years and Colin Law, Lloyd Valentine and Out of the Square Media now have a place in history.”
For the first time, Newcastle Business Club partnered with The Equal Futures Project to announce the Hunter Diversity Awards at the same event.
NSW Co-chair of the Women in Mining Network and BHP Executive, Deirdra Tindale was awarded 2018 Diversity Champion – Individual while engineering firm, AECOM, was awarded the 2018 Diversity Champion – Organisation.
Hunter Diversity Awards Chair, Liz Baker said the judges this year acknowledged the high quality of nominations and commended the work of all those who nominated.
“Our winners represent positive role models who have discovered what works in making their organisation or community a fairer, more equitable and more successful place,” Liz said.
“Both the finalists and winners highlight there are many organisations and individuals in our community taking positive and proactive steps to celebrate and encourage diversity. While we know more needs to be done if we are truly going to close the many gaps that exist, we hope you have taken some encouragement from the initiatives showcased and will continue to consider what steps you can take, as individuals and in your organisations to build a more equal and diverse community.”
Liz said recognising award recipients during the one event made sense.
“Diversity and difference cannot be celebrated in its own bubble. To truly be inclusive, it’s critical we celebrate diversity together, as a wider community, which is why The Equal Futures Project were so pleased to collaborate Newcastle Business Club,” Liz said.
“Congratulations to all award recipients who have made positive steps towards the betterment of our local community.”
