Yoga business bringing training to make Hunter a yoga hub

A Lake Macquarie yoga business is helping the Hunter to become a yoga hub by bringing a two year (650 hour) accredited Post Graduate Diploma in Yoga Therapy course to the region for the first time.

Kym McDonald, Owner of Yogic Wisdom and a qualified Yoga Therapist, is introducing the new Yoga Australia accredited course to help yoga teachers and health care professionals to use yoga for therapeutic benefit. Kym said the course will mean students no longer have to travel to Sydney to gain qualifications as she once did.

She said yoga therapy is a fast growing field of complementary therapy, combining the ancient teachings of yoga with western medical knowledge. She said it offers people, including those experiencing a wide range of ailments or disabilities, guidance and tools that they can use to enhance their life. It is delivered in one on one consultations or in groups. She also uses yoga therapy to assist in providing geriatric care.

“Yoga therapy tools include simple movements, breathing techniques, sound, relaxation and meditation techniques, dietary advice, lifestyle counselling and self-development guidelines,” Kym said.

“Yoga therapy works with all other health modalities, to get the best, holistic outcome for a person.”

Course participants will be trained in yoga and yoga therapy tools, observation and assessment skills, anatomy, physiology, biomedical and psychological foundations, developing therapeutic relationships, as well as the practicalities of running a yoga therapy practice. The course is unique in Australia in that students will observe Kym work with local people in free clinics.

The new course is in addition to the one-year (350 hours) yoga teacher training diploma course Yogic Wisdom has offered for the past three years.

Kym said yoga is booming in the Hunter and Central Coast and her new courses will help expand the pool of highly qualified teachers and practitioners. She is the NSW representative for industry body, Yoga Australia and is determined to ensure yoga is inclusive and used to help people experiencing health issues. She has just launched new beginners’ yoga classes for all ages and abilities.

“Yoga is for everyone, not matter what your age, fitness level or your state of health. Krishnamacharya says yoga must be made to suit the individual, not the individual to suit the yoga,” Kym said.

Both the Yoga Therapy Yoga Teacher Training courses start in February 2018. An information evening for the Yoga Therapy course will be held on September 21 at Yogic Wisdom’s Boolaroo studio. The session for Yoga Teacher Training is October 13.
