Earlier this year, Newcastle local Brent Smith opened Smith’s Ice Creamery, offering award winning premium ice cream to the locals and visitors of the city.
Smith’s Ice Creamery offer premium parlour ice cream and sorbet, produced in lush South East Queensland from paddock to plate.
The delicious scoops are made in small batches with fresh Australian Jersey Cow milk from the local farms and natural ingredients such as real strawberries, house made roasted macadamias and Australian Bush Honey, among others are sourced carefully for quality.
The results are a fresh, creamy textured and very flavoursome ice cream and sorbet. The method of cow, to cream, to you with unprocessed milk really makes a difference.
Brent said that Smith’s Ice Creamery offers a great product and a relaxed vibe.
The surf themed fit out was inspired from his love of the surf and spending time living in Bali between stints as a FlFO worker, where he worked as a Boiler Marker in Western Australia mine sites over the past 20 years.
Brent was keen to put down the welder and had always dreamed of owning a small business in hospitality.
“Thinking about the challenge of starting a small business was keeping me up at night and I knew I had to have a go,” Brent said.
“Being an ice cream lover myself, it was clear that there was a market in my local area for an ice cream shop offering a quality product.”
Lifestyle was also part of the decision, with a desire to spend more time with family.
“Family is a big part of what we are about at Smith’s Ice Creamery. Family and ice cream go hand in hand. Growing up in Newcastle, I have the best memories of going for a drive to the beach and the whole family having an ice cream, it was great at any time but seemed extra special at night.”
The business is a family affair with Brent’s partner Kim being a key part of the initial business planning, and her daughter Rosie also helping.
Smith’s Ice Creamery is conveniently located in the heart of The Junction within the bustling Kenrick Street restaurants and cafes.
“I love living and working in the area. The locals have been giving great feedback, they are loving the ice cream and shakes. Even during lockdown, a cohort of regulars have formed, having a chat and getting to know the customers has been a pleasure,” he concluded.
Smith’s Ice Creamery is open from Monday to Thursday: 12:00 pm – 9:30 pm, and 11:00 am – 9:30 pm from Friday to Sunday. Home delivery is also an option via Menulog.
