Newcastle Airport showcases leadership at Global Airport Development Forum

Newcastle Airport’s Executive General Manager People & Communications, Burcak Sezer GAICD represented Australia on the international stage at the Future-Proofing Airport Development workshop in Singapore, hosted by the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR).

Bringing together decision-makers from across the Asia-Pacific, the two-day forum focused on how airports can leverage next-generation technology to deliver operational excellence, sustainable growth and an enhanced passenger experience.

Burcak showcased how Newcastle Airport’s strategic growth and evolution, driven by a $250 million airport expansion including runway works and international terminal capacity, is unlocking new global connections and opportunities for the Hunter Region.

Over the next 20 years the upgrade and expansion of the runway and terminal will significantly strengthen the region, generating $12.7 billion in economic activity.

The workshop, delivered in partnership with CAAS, the Singapore Aviation Academy, Georgia Tech and Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, reinforced Newcastle Airport’s growing reputation for innovation and leadership in sustainable regional aviation development.

Burcak said Newcastle Airport’s journey from regional hub to global gateway was powered by people, including an experienced Board and passionate airport team and a region united in support.

“From all levels of government and business to the travelling public, the community’s advocacy and belief have been instrumental in the airport’s success. Our international terminal and broader airport expansion represent a shared achievement for the entire Hunter,” Burcak said.

“Together we’ve built something that connects our region to the world, while keeping the warmth and character that make us who we are.

“Forums like this are vital for regional airports. They allow us to share our learnings, strengthen international collaboration and ensure airports of all sizes are part of the global conversation on technology, sustainability and resilience.

“At Newcastle Airport, we’re delivering the airport our community deserves, one that leads the way in sustainable aviation. We’ve become the first airport in Australia to reach Airport Carbon Accreditation Level 4+, ranking us among the top 12 per cent of airports globally and our new terminal has achieved a 5 Star Green Star Design rating.

“It’s all part of our goal to be the Green Gateway to NSW and a source of pride for our region.”
