Local law firms named award finalists take on the big guns

Nexus Law Group has continued their rise to fame, being named as finalists in two categories of the Lawyers Weekly Australian Law Awards.

As finalist in the Law Firm of the Year category, the Newcastle-based Nexus are up against competitors who have been established for decades, many of them massive international firms.

Nexus Founder, Marcus McCarthy, said the entire team were thrilled with the nomination and proud to be amongst so many well-respected and recognised traditional law firms.

“It is incredible that after only four short years we have grown to compete on the same playing field with the likes of Ashurst, Clayton Utz, Herbert Smith Freehills and more,” Marcus said.

“We have been working hard to shift perceptions of dispersed law firms and we believe this recognition demonstrates that not only are our clients understanding the benefits of a dispersed law firm, but also our peers.”

Nexus pioneered the ’embedded contractor’ law firm model in Australia (aka the dispersed law firm) and is now the leading proponent of it, having doubled in size and membership in the last 12 months.

“The vision for Nexus Law Group was to improve the structure of the modern law firm to deliver better value to clients and lawyers at the same time. As we were leading the way in this model we had to develop our own practice management system to suit our requirements,” Marcus continued.

Nexus has also been named in the Innovator of the Year category as a finalist.

Another locally based law firm – Roberts Legal – are in the running for Regional Suburban Law Firm of the year. Additionally, their Business Development Manager, James Thomson, has been announced as a finalist for the Business Development Professional of the year award.

Roberts Legal was made a finalist because it has excelled in many areas but, in particular, for Building Construction Law and Commercial Litigation. Principal Sam Roberts, has written a comprehensive free Guide on the Building and Construction Industry Security of Payment Act which has been downloaded over 2000 times. This Guide has helped both industry lawyers, commercial builders, residential builders and companies to be educated on the NSW Security of Payment laws.

Principal, Sam Roberts, said lawyers at the firm have performed multimillion dollar mergers, acted on interstate commercial litigation matters and are sought out across NSW.

This is a significant indicator of the professional excellence Roberts Legal displays as Regional Firms do not usually have such a strong standing for winning cases against quite large firms,” Sam said.

“Roberts legal is not a generalist firm, but are experts when it comes to commercial litigation.

The Lawyers Weekly Australian Law Awards are now in their 16th year and is considered to be the premier legal event of the year. This prestigious event recognises individual excellence in the law, from the profession’s most senior ranks to its rising stars. It also celebrates trailblazers in legal business that have challenged traditional models and found better ways to practice law.

Winners will be announced on Friday, 2 September 2016 at Four Point by Sheraton, Sydney.
