Much needed funds will be able to be raised for cancer research and support services this weekend thanks to the generosity of a number of Hunter businesses and business people.
The biennial Pink Frangipani Ball will be held at Wests Leagues Club on Saturday, 26 April 2014. Around 420 people will attend the already sold out, black tie, event.
The ball is held in honour of Newcastle woman Sandra Rufo, who died on 24 April, 2005 after a courageous 10 year battle with breast cancer. She is survived by husband Andrea and daughters Giordanna and Jessica.
Andrea is a Newcastle City Councillor and Greater Building Society Business Banking Specialist. He made a promise to Sandra before her death that he would “make a difference” and try to help others fighting cancer. Six friends decided to hold a Ball and named it after Sandra's favourite flower.
This is the fifth time the Ball has been held with the first one held in 2006. The sponsors have all supported the Ball every time it has been held.
The major sponsors are:
- Greater Building Society
- Rankin and Nathan Lawyers
- Allianz Insurance
- Labour Co-op
- McGregor & McGregor Chartered Accountants.

The previous four balls have raised $293,000 to aid cancer research and cancer support services. Recipients of the funds include Hunter Medical Research Institute, Hunter Breast Cancer Education and Support Committee and Cure Cancer Australia.
The Ball's organising committee was recognised as this year's Newcastle Community Group of the Year in January.
