Hunter Business leaders need to give more tough love

Hunter business leaders need to practice some tough love in the workplace if they are to improve productivity in uncertain economic times according to a well-known Hunter business coach.

Shivani Gupta will be the guest speaker at the Lake Macquarie Business Breakfast on Wednesday, 11 September at Salas Function Centre in Warners Bay.

Shivani says most leaders fall into two categories of engagement, a soft engagement style or a hard line performance management style. She says “tough love” is a blend of these two styles that is needed for high performing teams.

“Leaders need to love and praise their teams more than they currently do,” Shivani says.

“Effective leaders also need to be able to say when certain behaviours are not OK and keep team members focussed on what they should be doing, rather than worrying about what everyone else is doing.”

Shivani says she developed her thinking on the topic based on her 11 years of leadership coaching, her own experience working in corporate Australia and her research. She says there are eight ancient Sanskrit leadership principles that are very relevant for today's managers. Shivani researched these tough love principles while in her home land of India last year.

Shivani is also an author and keynote speaker. She presented her Tough Love for Leaders keynote at a seminar in Sydney last month run by the founder of Thought Leaders Global, Matt Church. She says the presentation struck a chord with so many in the room and has already generated a lot of interest and bookings from across Australia.
