Over the past nine months the Board of the Newcastle Knights has worked with players, staff, sponsors, community, fans and members to create a new strategic direction that is focused upon how the Knights can be the best team in the NRL.
Knights Chairman, Brian McGuigan, said when launching the Club’s Strategic Plan, that to be a quality football team the Knights had to be a quality business.
“It is sobering to think that the majority of NRL clubs are struggling to be financially viable. The Knights isn’t the only organisation working its way out of tough times. But we have many advantages,” Brian said.
“We have an astute board and talented staff who are working together to get things back on track. We are also developing a playing and coaching team that is acutely aware of the need to restore a consistent and competitive culture on and off the field and our member and supporter base is second to none.”
“We want those who connect with us can expect to deal with an efficient organisation. Players are supported by best-practice operations and in turn are aware of their responsibilities to each other, their Club and our community. Members can expect more benefits with improved engagement.”
“We want to be fiercely competitive on the field, excellent and responsible in business, and committed to our values and the community.'” he said.
Knight CEO Matt Gidley said that tough decisions needed to be made to achieve this.
“The results on the field this year have been disappointing for the Knights. It is important we make the necessary change in order to build a Club that can achieve the objectives we have set out in our strategic plan,” Matt said.
“We are putting in place business and financial systems and procedures that have not previously existed. We are making sure our player development and support systems allow the team to compete with the best in the country. We are setting up the organisation as a responsible and respected partner for the business sector, wider community and sponsors.”
Both Chair and CEO also commented that the Club had been built on character and commitment and demonstrating on a national scale everything that is great about Newcastle and the Hunter Region.
“Winning is a by-product of this collective effort and we will strive to ensure this is a foundation of our team. Our aim is to be competitive and successful, the best-managed club in the NRL, financially sustainable and committed to the most advanced sports science and infrastructure. Our teams will include the best footballers who wear their jerseys with pride and play with passion.”
