Lambton naturopath Tammy Guest talks candidly and personally about “burnout” – a word that strikes fear in many driven businesspeople’s minds – in her debut book, Freedom From Fatigue.
Through her clinic Inspirational Health, Tammy has helped thousands of clients with burnout or teetering on its edge.
She found they all had a similar characteristic – an entrepreneurial drive. Her description for people: who could see where things could be done better and then did what it took to create those changes.
These clients were usually women and ranged from a small business owner to an intrapreneur in a big company or a mum in a family. They were all world-changing, purpose-driven, passionate women.
However, it was not until she stopped and took some space to work on her next business phase to help more of these women through The Entrepreneur’s Naturopath that Tammy realised she was suffering from burnout herself.
In 2014, she was awarded a one-month scholarship to an entrepreneurial incubator in Bali.
Tammy spent six months preparing for the course – ensuring the family home and business would run smoothly while she was studying overseas.
Then a week before leaving, the course was rescheduled for a different month.
In shock, she discussed the situation with her husband Murray.
The end result was Tammy would still go and use the opportunity to develop The Entrepreneur’s Naturopath and write a book.
“It was an opportunity, I would never have usually allowed myself,” Tammy said.
On her third day, after flying through a heap of work due to no interruptions, Tammy decided to review her most-recent video series.
“I was shocked to see the woman staring at me, she had the same look of the busy women I had been treating. She was overly intense and hidden behind her eyes was adrenal fatigue.”
“I then realised: I was tired, my memory was going, I couldn’t remember clients names, my tummy wasn’t balanced, I was forgetting to eat lunch and I was putting everyone else needs before mine.”
“I had been totally living my passion and was so good at helping clients get incredible results I didn’t think to stop and look after myself.”
During the next three weeks, Tammy used the methods and treatments she had applied to help others on herself.
She has woven this journey into her book Fatigue from Freedom, where she also shares her experience as a scientist and naturopath in a simple format to help the reader to recharge their batteries and maximise their energy.
Through simple fact sheets, practical strategies, questionnaires and guidance Tammy helps the reader discover what is really important to them and the importance of their health to obtain it.
“I thrive on being able to empower entrepreneurial women, and especially so their bodies can radiate with the same vitality they have for their businesses. We need to look after our bodies, so we can be 100 per cent for our clients, family, businesses, partners and ourselves.”
“I have also learnt from personal experience that taking busy women out of their work and home to retreats is where the magic happens. There are massive shifts in energy, focus and concentration and the recharge and reset that happens is inspiring to see.”
From these lessons Tammy has scheduled regular retreats into her life. From 13 – 18 May, she will hold The Vitality Retreat for Entrepreneurs in Bali.
To help more entrepreneurs recharge their batteries, Tammy is giving away her book Freedom From Fatigue to three lucky readers.
