Cessnock has taken out sixth place in TripAdvisor’s ‘best of 2014′ Australian travel destinations.
The list was compiled from travellers’ ratings and reviews of their most recommended destinations.
Hunter Valley Visitor Centre Coordinator, Melissa George, said she isn’t surprised Cessnock has made the list.
“It’s great to see Cessnock being recognised for its place as one of the oldest and most diverse wine regions in the world,” Melissa said.
“The Hunter Valley Visitor Centre received approximately 900 visitors a day over the Chirstmas and New Year period, so word of our proud and vibrant city is certainly spreading!”
The TripAdvisor website connects the largest travel community in the world, reaching nearly 260 million unique monthly visitors in 2013.
“TripAdvisor is arguably the world’s largest travel site, so to have exposure of this kind to such a wide audience is great for attracting tourists to the area,” Melissa continued.
TripAdvisor offers advice and ratings from real travellers and includes planning features with links to booking tools such as accommodation and activities.
“There are over 100 wineries in the area, and vineyard and cellar tours are among Cessnock’s most popular attractions,” one TripAdvisor review said.
“World-class golf courses, gourmet eateries, lush gardens and blissful spas round out the local appeal,” said another.
Cessnock has attracted world-renowned artists such as Rod Stewart, Bruce Springsteen, The Rolling Stones and Elton John.
International sporting superstars, the Japan National Football Team, also recently used Cessnock as a pre-competition camp for the Asian Cup 2015, showcasing the region on an international scale.
The top 10 list includes six Australian capital cities, with Cessnock representing the Hunter region:
