University radio station announces new interim CEO

Newcastle business leader, Deborah Wright is the new interim CEO of the University of Newcastle’s community radio station 2NURFM, which this year celebrates its 40thyear of broadcasting.

Newcastle’s easy listening radio station, which began broadcasting in March 1978, prides itself on community involvement and is funded by listener donations and sponsorship from businesses across Newcastle and the greater Hunter area.

As it prepares to mark its 40th year, Deborahwill bring her exceptional track record in media and broadcasting to take the station into the next era of its evolution.

Deborah was previously the Director of Regional Strategy for Nine Entertainment Co. and prior to this, CEO and Station Manager for the NBN Television group of companies.

Deborah also has a strong connection to the University of Newcastle, having served on the University Council from 2007 to 2018 and as a member of the 2NURFM Advisory Board from 2015 to 2018 and its Chair from April 2017 until recently.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Caroline McMillen said Deborah was a highly skilled and respected senior executive and board director with expertise in providing leadership, strategic direction, change management and an empowered people and culture environment.

“Deborahbrings a unique mix of relevant and extensive industry experience, combined with knowledge of 2NURFM and an in-depth understanding of the strategic priorities for the university,” Caroline said.

“These qualities, combined with her extensive knowledge, passion and connections with the region and its community, provide the University of Newcastle with a significant opportunity toshape the station for future success.”

In addition to her previous University Council role, Deborahhas been a Director and Chair ofa number of broadcasting industry companies as well as a Director of the Hunter EconomicDevelopment Corporation and Newcastle Airport.

Deborah said she was thrilled to be joining the University of Newcastle in such a unique role,which would draw on her knowledge and experience in media, broadcasting, strategy and the university.

“2NURFM, now in its 40th year of broadcasting, is a highly respected community radio stationand I feel most privileged to lead and manage the business through its next phase ofdevelopment, with the support of a most experienced and passionate team,” Deborah said.

2NURFM commenced broadcasting on 17 March 1978 and was the first FM station to be established in the Hunter Region. 2NUR is proudly celebrating its 40th Anniversary this year. It is anot-for-profit community radio station licenced under the provision of the Broadcasting Services Act (1992). The licensee is the University of Newcastle and the station is located on the University’s Callaghan Campus.
