Toxfree – HunterNet member in focus

Our HunterNet member in focus this month is Toxfree, one of Australia’s leading waste management and industrial services companies. An ASX listed company, Toxfree has 80 branches across Australia, including three in the Hunter, employing over 1,500 people.

Toxfree’s General Manager – Technical and Environmental Services, Dr Karl Baltpurvins said Toxfree is growing its service presence significantly.

“With the acquisition of Worth Recycling and Daniels Health last year, combined with our existing services, Toxfree are well placed to service a broad range of sectors across the Hunter,” Karl said.

With operations located at Heatherbrae, Kurri Kurri and Tomago, Toxfree employs environmental scientists, chemists, operators and skilled drivers to service the local client base.

The Toxfree business operates over five broad markets; resources, infrastructure, industrial, regulated and healthcare.

“Toxfree differentiates itself in the marketplace through its technical expertise and innovative approach in developing solutions to our customer’s needs,” said Karl. In the Hunter, Toxfree has a focus on infrastructure and the resources markets.

“It is essential that right up-front, all projects plan for waste management to be an integral component of project delivery.

“The lack of planning on how to effectively deal with waste can lead to delays on servicing and may also put the project at risk due to environmental compliance issues.”

Toxfree is currently working on a number of high profile projects across the Hunter. On the Newcastle Light Rail, they are undertaking non-destructive digging. This involves using high pressure water to excavate materials where services could be located. The resultant NDD mud is then removed by a vacuum pump. The benefit is that any services (electrical, pipes, etc.) that are located in the excavation zone will not be damaged, reducing the cost of the civil works.

Toxfree has also been recently engaged by Glencore to provide total waste management services for Glencore in the Hunter.

“The implementation of a total waste management system can achieve significant cost savings through improved resource management and accurate waste reporting,” Karl said.

“It is also becoming an increasing focus of large organisations, such as Glencore, to help them meet their social
