Stories of hope from local filmmakers

Stories of hope from local filmmakers

Jaw-droppingly beautiful landscapes, historical monuments and friendly people all contrive to make Nepal a compelling location for visual stories.

However, when Belinda Bow, owner of Green Chilli Marketing and Ambassador for 3 Angels Nepal, and film crew set out to film their documentary, they had a darker side of Nepal in mind – that of human trafficking and misery.

3 Angels Nepal, founded by Dr Rajendra Gautam and Sarah Gautam in 2008, educates people on the tactics of human traffickers, plus offers information on basic health and hygiene.

Belinda said that she believes it is important to give back where possible and should be a component of whatever you’re doing.

“It could have been any country, but I discovered Nepal has the highest rate of human trafficking and the country is very much at the mercy of others due to poverty and lack of education,” Belinda said.

“I felt that the work of 3 Angels Nepal aligned with my desire to make a worthwhile contribution to helping women and children, particularly when the focus is on education, which can make for a generational shift.”

Every 26.28 minutes, a girl in Nepal is trafficked across the border into India for an average price of $104.63 (what many people pay for a dinner out). That’s 54 girls every day, almost 20,000 girls every year.

“There are communities in Nepal completely devoid of women and children,” Belinda continued.

“Now think about what this really means: communities without mothers and daughters, without futures, and without generations of family.”

As a wife, and mother of two children, Belinda realised that if she herself had been born in Nepal, the risk of human trafficking to her would be real.

The 3 Angels Nepal team work tirelessly to help the plight of the Nepali people, but the team felt more was needed. They wanted to share the 3 Angels Nepal project and the true impact of human trafficking. So was born the 3 Angels Nepal documentary project: Latitude.

In March 2014, in conjunction with 3 Angels Nepal, a team of Newcastle businesspeople (Belinda, Cinematographer Daniel Bracken, Photographer Melissa Histon and Ambassador Robyn Raymond) headed to Nepal where they exposed some heart-wrenching stories of betrayal, but also stories of resurrection and renewal.

Their documentary about the work of 3 Angels Nepal, the impacts of human trafficking and stories of hope will be launched on the Wednesday, 19 November 2014.
