Local lawyer a finalist in national awards

A Hunter lawyer has been named as a finalist for a national legal award.

Health and aged care Lawyer, Catherine Henry, has been named one of six finalists in the health Partner of the Year category in the Lawyers Weekly Partner of the Year Awards.

Catherine is the Founder and Principal of Catherine Henry Lawyers. She has more than 30 years’ experience as a solicitor, predominantly in health and medical law, working on some of Australia’s highest profile cases.

She said she was honoured to be recognised among peers from around Australia on behalf of her talented, local health and medical team.

“I believe passionately in the value of the common law system in maintaining and improving standards of practice in the medical area,” Catherine said.

“Our work can help make life better for patients and health consumers.”

Born and bred in Newcastle, Ms Henry practiced law in Sydney for almost 20 years. More than a decade ago she returned to be a partner at King Street Lawyers, before taking over the practice and creating Catherine Henry Lawyers in 2009. Before entering private practice, she worked as a Senior Solicitor at the NSW Health Care Complaints Commission.

Catherine has long been active in mental health advocacy for adults and adolescents. From 2008 until 2011 she was a legal member of the Mental Health Review Tribunal. She was President of the Newcastle Law Society from 2004 until 2009 and led the campaign for a redeveloped justice precinct in Newcastle. Catherine has also been recognised in the most recent Doyles Guide listing of leading law firms in the category of Recommended Medical Negligence Compensation Lawyers (Plaintiff).

Lawyers Weekly Managing Editor, Aleks Vickovich said the awards, in their third year, seek to celebrate professional excellence in partners across a range of practice areas.

“This prestigious and competitive awards program showcases Australia’s top subject matter experts in the legal field, and the leaders of the profession,” Aleks said.

“This year’s finalists represent the best of the best, showcasing impressive leadership, technical expertise, mentorship and business development skills.

“Those celebrated as finalists and winners can demonstrate exceptional performance in their area of practice, as well as have outstanding contributions to their organisations, client networks and the broader community.”

The awards will be held in Sydney on June 15.
