Kurri Kurri Business Chamber unveil new committee

Kurri Kurri District Business Chamber has announced their new Committee, confirmed after their Annual General Meeting on the 10 August 2016.

Kerry Hallett, from Hunter Region Business Hub, has been appointed as President, with Toby Thomas, from Thomas and Associates, as Vice President and Lesley Morris, Towns With Heart, as Secretary.

The committee is made up of Chris McClung from Weston Aluminium, Marj Wotherspoon and Lorraine Aspinall, both of whom are retired businesswomen, and Rod Doherty.

Kerry said the new committee would like to acknowledge and thank Rod Doherty, the outgoing President, for his long career on the executive of the Chamber, spanning well over 20 years.

“During this time so much changed and moved on in the Kurri Kurri district, and Rod was there every step of the way. We wish him well in the upcoming Council elections,” Kerry said.

Kerry Hallett is the manager of Hunter Region Business Hub and Hunter Region Business Enterprise Centre. Her previous experience has included loans officer with State Bank, cellar door work, management of doctors’ surgeries, real estate, primary industry – particularly beef, sheep and poultry, and several small family businesses. Kerry is passionate about small business and working with them to reach their goals, whatever they may be. Her acceptance of this new role will enable her to assist the local business community in a different area.

“Committees are groups with a common cause. Kurri Kurri District Business Chamber has a group of experienced business people who want what is best for Kurri Kurri,” Kerry continued.

“Kurri Kurri has endured a hard few years with the closure of the Hydro Aluminium Smelter in 2012 resulting in the loss of over 600 local jobs, the Hunter Expressway being completed not long after, meaning a reduction in workers using our local stores and the general downturn in mining. We are encouraging the local business community to become involved in the Chamber to offer their opinion and to help identify and implement ways to rebuild and promote Kurri Kurri back to what we all know we can be.”

“The new committee looks forward to working with the local business community and encourages you to join the Chamber and support our work. We are looking for feedback to make your chamber and your community better, so please don’t hesitate to let us know. All suggestions will be considered, so don’t be shy.”
