hyp partners with Lifeline to tackle suicide in the Hunter

Young members of the Hunter business community have pledged to make a contribution to help to eliminate suicide within the Hunter region.

The network for young business professionals, Hunter Young Professionals (hyp), has announced that Lifeline Hunter Central Coast will be its community partner for 2018.

President Lauren Armstrong said collaborating with organisations who share their values and vision is at the heart of what hyp does.

She said that as hyp is a community organisation, it is important that its profile is used to contribute to the community. hyp will donate $1 from every ticket sold to hyp events this year plus facilitate additional donations from members.

“The conversation we are having this year is about how we can make a meaningful contribution,” Lauren said.

“There are many ways to contribute to a meaningful purpose, whether it be contributing to the development of your team, the growth of an organisation or by raising awareness for important issues in the community.

“Lifeline makes a great contribution to the lives of young people in our community through its 13 11 14 crisis support line, face-to-face counselling, training and other community suicide and crisis prevention services.

“Suicide is the leading cause of death for Australians aged between 15 and 44, which is a huge tragedy, and we hope that by partnering with Lifeline we can make a difference in our local area.”

Lifeline Hunter Central Coast Regional Manager, Rob Sams said the funds will be used to support local services.

“We are looking forward to working with hyp, its members and their networks to raise awareness about suicide prevention,” Rob said.

“Suicide is preventable and there are practical things we can all do to safely help people in crisis.

“Working with the next generation of the region’s business leaders is a great foundation in our mission to tackle suicide in our community.”

More than eight Australians die by suicide each day, double the number of people who die on the roads. It is estimated that there are more than 65,000 suicide attempts made each year in Australia.

hyp provides opportunities for people aged between 18 to 40 to network in a business environment, gain new management and leadership skills, interact socially together and support the local community. Membership is free.
