Hunter region asked to demonstrate change

Hunter businesses are being asked to ‘walk the talk’ and enter nominations into the inaugural Hunter Diversity Awards.

The Hunter Diversity Awards is an initiative of the Equal Futures Project – a local group of business leaders dedicated to raising awareness and funds that will facilitate gender equity in the region.

Awards Chair, Belinda Smith said that the Awards would recognise and celebrate diversity champions among the Hunter business community.

“We are looking to highlight those who have discovered what works in making their organisation and/or community a fairer, more equitable and more successful place to live and work,” Belinda said.

“It’s about finding out what local people are putting into successful practice.”

The Awards were developed following the 2014 International Women’s Day event where a guest panel which included business leaders Eileen Doyle, Tracey McCosker, Caroline McMillen and Will Creedon, explored what was possible in building gender equity in the region.

“We received feedback from many of the 400 people at that event that they were intending to implement change within their organisations – so we have launched the Awards to help highlight the work that was being done,” Belinda continued.

There are three categories for organisations and one for individual diversity champions:

  • Inclusive Workplace Champion – organisation
  • Workplace Flexibility Champion – organisation
  • Gender Equity Champion ‚Äì organisation
  • Diversity Champion – individual

Nominations are now open and close Friday, 20 February 2015. Winners will be announced at the International Women’s Day breakfast on Friday, 6 March 2015 at Wests New Lambton.

The Awards are being supported by gender equity champion The Sista Code, the local team at Endota Spa and the Newcastle Herald.
