Hunter housing provider now Australia’s largest

Hunter-based Compass Housing Services has been selected by the Queensland Government to play a key role in Queensland’s largest ever housing renewal project, which will make it the largest community housing provider in Australia.

Minister for Housing and Public Works The Hon Tim Mander MP has announced the Queensland Government’s Logan Renewal Initiative to revitalise social housing in the South-east Queensland city over the next 20 years.

Compass Housing Services and NSW-based social housing property developer BlueCHP joined together to create Logan City Community Housing (LCCH), with the consortium winning the tender for the renewal project. The initiative will replace 1,000 dwellings with 1,600 social houses, and more than 1,000 new affordable dwellings. The consortium will carry out the management of more than 4,600 housing dwellings from mid-2015.

Compass chief corporate services officer and director of LCCH, Lyndall Robertshaw, said Compass was honoured and excited to be involved in such an important housing project that will help so many people.

“Compass will be taking the skills and programs gained from its management and construction of social and affordable housing in the Hunter, Central Coast, Dubbo and Broken Hill,” Lyndall said. “This is probably the most complex social housing project to be undertaken in the country.”

“We were chosen because we have a proven record and understand that housing assistance is not just about putting a roof over someone’s head.”

“As we do locally, we will be providing a range of support for tenants to assist them to build a better community and, if possible, to find a pathway out of social housing.”

Last month, Compass took over Brisbane based not-for-profit housing provider 4walls.
