A series of educational videos to help reduce fatalities on NSW roads has taken out a national award for local production company Good Eye Deer.
The compelling and traumatic video series that explores the consequences and human costs of the choices made when driving won Best Education and Training Video at the 2014 National Australian Video Producers Association (AVPA) Awards this month.
The series also won the Gold Award for cinematography from the Australian Cinematographers Society in the Corporate and Education category at the 2014 NSW and ACT awards.
The seven-part series, Your Keys, Your Choice, Your Consequences was produced by Newcastle production company, Good Eye Deer, as part of the Traffic Offenders Intervention Program (TOIP) run by Police Citizens Youth Clubs NSW (PCYC).
Each year more than 400 people die on NSW roads. The TOIP series – through raw and confronting interviews with offenders, victims, lawyers, police, paramedics and other emergency services personnel – demonstrates the consequences of making poor decisions while driving.
The series includes about 60 minutes of video and took almost 12 months to shoot and produce. Good Eye Deer Creative Director Gavin Banks said the result was a successful collaboration between about 10 organisations and many more individuals who believed in the power of education.
“The potency of the series comes from interviews with people directly affected by the consequences of driving decisions. For our part it was about filming it in such a way that the viewer builds a relationship with those on film and therefore making the experience much more about the intimate conversation rather than a video,” Gavin said.
PCYC GM Member Services Justin Hayes said each of the stories were tragic, confronting and painful.
“PCYC chose the unique talents of the team at Good Eye Deer to capture these stories so that they would have lasting impact on the people who had to complete the course with PCYC,” Justin said.
Leading Senior Constable Adam Partridge is a TOIP Lecturer and said the impact the series was profound.
“The impact was greater than any lecture I’ve given in more than 25 years in the Police Force. I’m so glad we have these videos as a resource, they’re going to go a long way in saving lives on our roads,” Adam said.
Much of the filming was conducted in the Hunter. The series also features interviews with people from the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service and Brain Injury Association (Hunter).
TOIP is the successful collaboration between PCYC and The Police Force of NSW, The NSW Ambulance Service, Department of Corrective Services, National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre, Riviere Law – Criminal Law Experts, Department of Justice / Kempsey Court House and the Centre for Road Safety / Transport NSW.
