Hunter businesspeople to shave for a cause

A local group of businesspeople have combined to raise funds and awareness for the Leukaemia Foundation, by participating in the World’s Greatest Shave.

Your Business Connections (YBC) is a networking group who have 15 people participating in their fundraising event being held this Wednesday, 11 March 2015 and have set the lofty target of $10,000.

YBC President Alex Mitchell said that they run a not-for-profit networking group, so they saw the opportunity to support a charity as a perfect fit for their group.

“YBC has grown in the last few years to have in excess of 30 members and we now want to give back to the community,” Alex said.

“Individually, there is a limit to what you can achieve in raising money for charity, but through YBC and our membership group we are able to hold events and raise significant money for a good cause.”

Alex is the cofounder of Nulex Construction and Backyard Grannys and is one of the participants who will be shaving his head.

“I am so impressed by the group of people participating, some who are colouring their hair or beards, some men waxing their legs, and of course the people shaving their heads,” Alex continued.

“One of the shavers is actually a female participant ‚Äì Toni Knight, from Beyond Happy ‚Äì and I think she is the bravest of all! We will also have Richard Windeyer of Mortgage Choice Cardiff, Wade Spink of Extra Spark Electrical and Peter Parkinson all fundraising for a fully shaved head”

In addition to this fundraising event YBC is supporting the Leukaemia Foundation by providing them with a one-year membership to their group.

Chris McMillan, Leukaemia Foundation General Manager NSW/ACT said that involvement in the business community is important to help grow awareness of what they do and how they can support locals.

“The Leukaemia Foundation receives no ongoing government funding and depends on the support of the community to continue to provide vital services for Australians living with blood cancer. Your Business Connections is bursting with professionals eager to share their expertise, contacts and make introductions to provide Chelsea Turrell, the Foundation’s local fundraising representative, the best opportunities to raise funds to support patients in the Newcastle and Hunter region,” Chris said.

“The generous one year complimentary membership and the sponsorship by Blackbutt Hotel of Chelsea’s breakfasts allow us to do exactly that with the business community. As the need for our services through Newcastle and the Hunter region grow we are incredibly grateful to Your Business Connections for facilitating this important relationship between the Foundation and the community.”
