Grant Walmsley joins WEA Hunter

A familiar face has joined WEA Hunter as a Senior Trainer in WEA Hunter’s Diploma of Music Industry. Cofounder of the Screaming Jets, Grant Walmsley will combine his experience and continue his ongoing support for the local music industry.

A stalwart of the music sector and well-known as a professional musician, he is an accomplished songwriter and producer who after leaving the Screaming Jets, continued to write and produce music and formed Agents of Peace while also teaching music at TAFE NSW in the Hunter. He has transformed into GW Freebird and continues to write and produce while working across the community to encourage and support local artists.

Most recently he was appointed to the Newcastle Live Music Taskforce alongside State Member Tim Crakanthorp and Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes, as well as select leading music industry professionals.

At WEA Hunter, Grant will be working with students who are seeking music career paths in performance, recording and sound engineering, promotions, management and marketing.

“This is an exciting opportunity for local musicians. This course will help musicians understand the business of the music industry and provide them with hands-on experience from trainers and educators, like me, who have worked in the industry for decades,” Grant said.

“I am passionate about investing in local talent and providing ways for local people to work in their vocation here in the Hunter. This course provides the right mix of skills training and education.”

Grant is part of a team of local music industry professionals who are highly experienced and passionate about teaching practical skills and establishing direct links with working musicians and industry contacts.

Following on from the success of the Diploma of Musical Theatre which has seen graduates progress on to courses with other prestigious colleges such as the Australian Institute of Music (AIM) and the Victorian College of the Arts (VCA) WEA Hunter is offering the Diploma of Music Industry from Semester 2 in 2018.

As well as helping students to develop their music skills and expose them to emerging technologies and music practices, the WEA course will also provide students with the opportunity to learn about promotion, copyright and contracts, management and planning.

Students will also have the opportunity for performance and practical music support experience through live productions held at the WEA Hunter Community Art Space in Beaumont Street Hamilton.

WEA Hunter CEO, Rowan Cox said that Grant’s involvement was a real coup for the organisation and the students.

“Grant is a highly regarded music professional who joins the team with a wealth of knowledge and decades of teaching experience that will provide WEA students with a real edge,” Rowan said.
