Global skills challenge final hurdle to Abu Dhabi

Lake Macquarie’s Dylan Bolch will head to Newcastle next week to compete for the right to represent Australia at the 44th WorldSkills International Competition in Abu Dhabi this October.

WorldSkills Australia’s Global Skills Challenge will take place in Newcastle from 5-8 July and brings together more than 100 young people from 16 countries to compete in the lead-up to the WorldSkills International in Abu Dhabi, also known as the trade and skills Olympics.

Also coinciding with NAIDOC Week, the competition will be of particular importance for Dylan, who is a proud Kamilaroi man and an inspirational role model for other young Aboriginal people.

As a fully qualified boilermaker with Macquarie Manufacturing, Dylan has spent more than 10 hours each week training under the guidance of his mentor John Anderson, a metal fabrication teacher at TAFE NSW Newcastle.

Since winning silver in welding at the national WorldSkills event last October, Dylan has been invited to participate in international industry welding competitions in both China and America.

“I want to win gold on the international stage,” Dylan said.

“I would say my skills have improved tenfold in these competitions. I have been practising 30 different welding techniques and if I get to Abu Dhabi, I’ll be asked to perform four. The past six months have been flat out, but when I get there it will be worth it.”

Dylan is one of nine TAFE NSW students and alumni in the 20-member Australian Skills Squad who will compete against the world’s best apprentices, trainees and students under the age of 23.

The Global Skills Challenge will be the final test of their skills with the announcement of the Australian Team Skillaroos to be announced at the closing ceremony on Saturday 8 July.
