Mining sector employees looking to become an Open Cut Examiner (OCE), a Mine Supervisor, or a Mine Manager now have access to a nationally recognised qualification through a Hunter-based provider of training services to the mining and resources sector.
Forsythes Training has been approved to run the Certificate IV in Surface Coal Mining (Open Cut Examiner) qualification.
Forsythes Training CEO, Chad White said the Certificate IV course is a mandatory qualification for people who want to be an Open Cut Examiner (OCE) at a surface coal mine but don’t have a Bachelor of Mining Engineering degree from an Australian university.
The 14 week course gives people skills to manage day-to-day operational mining activities as well as handle in-depth issues and mining related problems.
Chad said highly experienced trainer and Mine Manager, Jeff Hanlon will teach the course. Jeff will deliver the course from Newcastle and Singleton or at mine sites.
“Jeff is also delivering our face-to-face group mentoring and coaching service for people undertaking NSW Open Cut Examiners (OCE) written or oral examinations,” Chad said.
“With more than 35 years’ experience as a mining engineer and mining manager, with Australia’s leading mining companies, Jeff knows the resources sector and the OCE exam process inside and out.”
Jeff has an NSW Open Cut Mine Manager’s Certificate of Competency and an NSW Open Cut Examiner’s Certificate of Competency. He has also served on the NSW OCE examinations panel.
An OCE is responsible for ensuring a safe work environment by applying the safety and health management system in and around work areas of surface excavation, including monitoring the quantity and quality of output, supervising others, and applying solutions to non-routine problems.
Chad said the new course extends Forsythes Training’s comprehensive service offering to the mining sector to ensure they have the skills to operate productively and safely, now and in the future.

NSW mines must comply with the Maintenance of Competence Scheme developed by the NSW Resources Regulator, in consultation with the Mining and Petroleum Competence Board.
