Ducks for Dollars a winner

The annual Ducks for Dollars fundraiser has raised $53,000 for local Surf Clubs and the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service.

Ducks 4 Dollars was created in 2004 and each year attracts support from hundreds of local people and businesses who adopt a duck.

On Australia Day a number of ‘fields’ of adopted ducks were released into Newcastle Harbour where they bobbed and floated with the tide across a 200 metre course for line honours and prizes.

The winners were:

  • Corporate Duck Winner | The Junction Hotel
  • Yellow Duck Winner | Duck Ticket 2233, Edward Porters
  • 2nd Prize Winner | Duck Ticket 452, Geoffrey Merlin
  • 3rd Prize Winner | Duck Ticket 4910, Tim Burns
  • Sponsor Winner | Moonshadow Cruises
  • Club Duck Race | Nobbys SLSC

Ducks 4 Dollars is a unique fundraiser between the Rescue Helicopter and 13 local Surf Clubs, which has raised more than $650,000 in 10 years.

Rescue Helicopter Business Manager, Chad Griffith, said that Ducks 4 Dollars was a highlight event on Australia Day.

“There was lots of fun with ducks on the harbour again this year but there were very serious messages behind this fun,” Chad said.

“Many lives have been saved during the summer months by the skill and commitment of Life Savers and Rescue Helicopter crews. The money raised helps fund the training and the equipment our people need to help protect the community.”

The 2014 event was supported by

Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service

Since 1975 the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service has grown from a part-time voluntary summer beach patrol to world-class aeromedical search and rescue operation.

No one has ever paid to be assisted by the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service. That is because their fellow citizens and the NSW Government through NSW Health and the Ambulance Service of NSW provide the funds that ensure the rescue helicopters are there when and where they are needed.
