Don’t DIS my Ability

A fun day to celebrate International Day of People has been organised in a partnership between Lake Macquarie City Council, Newcastle City Council and Disability Network Hunter Inc.

Lake Macquarie City Council's Manager Community Planning, John Ferguson, is inviting everyone to come along to Speers Point Park on Monday, 2 December 2012 to join in the fun.

“International Day of People with a Disability is designated by the United Nations as a time to celebrate and recognise the achievements, contributions and abilities of people with a disability,” John said.

“This year the campaign, Don't DIS my Ability, celebrates the diversity and ability of people with a disability.”

“The fun day will have information stalls, hands-on activities such as arts and crafts, local entertainment performed by schools and community groups, and a free sausage sizzle provided by Lions Club volunteers.”

Local provider, Ability Options, will provide interactive demonstrations on seed planting for participants to take home, nurture and grow and will also give away some potted plants from their Ability Options Wholesale Nursery.

“Ability Options Charlestown is pleased to celebrate with clients and their families in a fun day with other service providers to promote independence, understanding and acceptance of people with a disability in order to build stronger connections between people with a disability and their community,” said Sheridan Ferrier, Community Relationship Manager.

“It's an exciting time right now for people with disabilities in the Hunter with the recent introduction of the National Disability Insurance Scheme and, in December, the Special Olympics 2013 Asia Pacific Games and the International Day of People with a Disability, all shining the spotlight on the Hunter.”

Ability Options provides services through a variety of programs across NSW to over 2,000 people and their families. Ability Options’ support programs and services are focused around each person's needs and aims to support people with disabilities providing them with the opportunity to achieve their dreams and aspirations, and be valued contributing members of our community.

The 2013 theme for International Day of People with Disability is 'Break barriers, open doors: for an inclusive society for all'.
