Business support brings athletes to Hunter

The region’s premier athletics meet is on again this weekend bringing benefits to the community and the economy thanks to the support of Hunter businesses.

This year marks the fifth anniversary of the Greater Building Society being a major sponsor of the Hunter Track Classic.

The ‘grand prix style’ athletics meet is part of the Australian Athletics Tour. It will be held at the Hunter Sports Centre on January 31 from 6pm-9pm.

More than 100 top local, Australian and international athletes will compete across 20 track and field events. Athletes include local legend and three time Paralympic Gold Medallist Kurt Fearnley, Men’s Javelin 2014 Commonwealth Games Bronze Medalist Hamish Peacock, Women’s High Jump 2014 Commonwealth Games Gold Medallist Elanore Patterson.

Greater Building Society CEO Scott Morgan said the event also brings opportunities and inspiration for local athletes and kids. That includes the Greater Building Society Hunter’s Fastest Kid. Now in its second year, the event encourages kids aged from five to 15 to have a run in one of six races in front of a big crowd. The winner of each race receives a Live Saver Account from The Greater.

“Holding such a premier meet in our region is good for businesses too as it brings athletes and visitors to stay and spend money in our region,” Scott said.

Other local organisations getting behind the event are

  • ibis Newcastle
  • Raine and Horne
  • Secure Scaffolding
  • Lake Macquarie Council
  • F3 Motor Auctions
  • Grandstand Sports Injury Clinic
  • Achieve Financial Group
  • NBN Television
  • Newcastle Herald
