Additive manufacturing is revolutionising industry

The additive manufacturing or 3D printing industry is now significantly progressing.

This relatively new industry is already unleashing the innovations and ideas of companies, students, entrepreneurs and enthusiasts across our region and will continue to do so for years to come.

Metallurgist and Acting Director of CSIRO Lab22 Innovation Hub, Daniel East said that additive manufacturing is impacting the industry in a big way.

“Additive manufacturing has the capability to take your designs from the computer and make them a reality,” Daniel said.

“With additive manufacturing, you don’t have to design your parts to allow them to be removed from a mold or to minimise machining. You have complete design freedom, whatever shape you require or desire.

“The lack of tooling allows you to make one-off bespoke products that fit the customer or application exactly, or to produce prototypes on demand. The advancement of additive manufacturing will lead to the implementation of on-demand, distributed manufacturing.”

New enterprise, Thre3dp is striving to support and promote this industry as a tool for innovation and to make it more accessible to the Hunter Region, by offering a local source of high quality 3D printing consumables.

Additive manufacturing offers not only a competitive advantage, but the ability to unlock hidden potential. Organisations that explore this technology will have the opportunity to be brought to the forefront of their industry.

Thre3dp is part of the Quarry Mining stable; they have been providing a wide range of quality products, service and support to the construction and mining industry for 30 years.

Industry needs companies to innovate, to do the research and development that encourages creative thinking. Additive manufacturing is part of the recipe for creativity.

Technology, Design and Analytics Manager for Quarry Mining, Callan Boslem and his team are helping to forge the beginnings of what will ultimately be known as manufacturing.

“Ever since people developed the stone tools, advancement has always ensued. That is why advanced manufacturing is a tokenistic term thrown out there by politicians. Real manufacturers and most businesses are always advancing,” Callan said.
