The Salvation Army is asking the Hunter community to give a few hours to collect donations this Red Shield Appeal Doorknock Weekend, 24 – 25 May 2014, and help the Salvos support over one million people in need.
“People in the Hunter are always very generous with their time and support and so we ask that this year people get on board again and sign up to volunteer,” Salvation Army spokesperson Amber Dale said.
The Doorknock Weekend goal for the Hunter is $365,000, which goes toward providing vital services including, welfare centres, youth services, accommodation services, financial services, disaster and emergency services and much more.
To achieve the national Red Shield Appeal Doorknock goal of $10 million, which forms part of bigger Red Shield Appeal goal of $80 million, the Salvos are calling on you for your help.
“We are encouraging businesses to get involved with the Red Shield Appeal by hosting a Salvos Red Threads Day at their place of business during the month of May.
“This initiative allows businesses to hold a ‘red day’ for staff, which may include wearing red clothes, dressing up the window display, creating a team challenge on Facebook – whatever works best for them – as a gold coin fundraiser for the Salvos.”
“We are hoping for a ‘sea of red’ across Newcastle in the week leading up to the Doorknock Weekend.”
The Salvation Army is in a unique position to assist individuals and families who fall on hard times, providing critical needs such as immediate food assistance, long term financial counselling, drug/alcohol/gambling rehabilitation, skills development and job placement.
Providing assistance to those doing it tough costs $5 million in the Hunter region alone.
